Modal Verb क्या है?

English Grammar में Modal Verb ऐसे Helping Verbs होते हैं जो मुख्य क्रिया (Main Verb) के साथ मिलकर किसी कार्य की Ability (क्षमता), Permission (अनुमति), Possibility (संभावना), Advice (सलाह), Obligation (कर्तव्य), Necessity (आवश्यकता), Request (अनुरोध), Promise (वादा), Prediction (भविष्यवाणी) आदि को व्यक्त करते हैं।

यदि Main Verb किसी कार्य को दर्शाती है, तो Modal Verb उस कार्य के पीछे छिपे हुए भाव (Meaning or Mood) को स्पष्ट करती है।

Examples:
  • I can swim.
  • She may come tomorrow.
  • You should study regularly.
  • We must follow traffic rules.
  • They will help us.
ध्यान दें: Modal Verb कभी भी अकेले Sentence का अर्थ पूरा नहीं करती। यह हमेशा किसी Main Verb के साथ प्रयोग होती है।

Modal Verb सीखना क्यों जरूरी है?

यदि आप केवल Verb जानते हैं लेकिन Modal Verbs का प्रयोग नहीं जानते, तो आपकी English अधूरी मानी जाएगी। क्योंकि वास्तविक बातचीत (Spoken English), Writing, Competitive Exams, Interviews और School Grammar में Modal Verbs का बहुत अधिक उपयोग होता है।

उदाहरण के लिए, यदि आपको किसी से अनुमति लेनी हो, सलाह देनी हो, अपनी क्षमता बतानी हो या भविष्य की संभावना व्यक्त करनी हो, तो Modal Verbs की आवश्यकता होती है।

Modal Verb की पहचान

Modal Verbs की पहचान करना बहुत आसान है। यदि किसी वाक्य में Can, Could, May, Might, Shall, Should, Will, Would, Must, Need, Dare, Used to आदि Helping Verbs Main Verb के साथ आएँ, तो वे Modal Verbs कहलाते हैं।

Subject + Modal Verb + V¹ + Object

Modal Verb के बाद हमेशा Verb की First Form (V¹) का प्रयोग किया जाता है।

Modal Verb की मुख्य विशेषताएँ

  • Modal Verb Helping Verb होती है।
  • इसके बाद हमेशा Verb की First Form आती है।
  • Modal Verb स्वयं Action नहीं बताती।
  • Main Verb के अर्थ को बदल देती है।
  • Negative बनाने के लिए Not लगाया जाता है।
  • Question बनाने के लिए Modal Verb पहले आती है।
  • इनका Third Form या -ing Form नहीं बनता।
  • इनके साथ Do, Does, Did का प्रयोग सामान्यतः नहीं किया जाता।

Modal Verb के प्रकार (Types of Modal Verbs)

Modal Verbs कई प्रकार की भावनाओं, स्थितियों और उद्देश्यों को व्यक्त करती हैं। हर Modal Verb का अपना विशेष उपयोग होता है। नीचे दी गई तालिका से आपको इन सभी का एक प्रारंभिक परिचय मिलेगा।

Can (कैन) Modal Verb

Can सबसे अधिक प्रयोग होने वाला Modal Verb है। इसका प्रयोग मुख्य रूप से Ability (क्षमता), Permission (अनुमति), Possibility (संभावना), Request (अनुरोध) और Opportunity (अवसर) को व्यक्त करने के लिए किया जाता है।

याद रखें:
Can = सकता है / सकती है / सकते हैं

1. Can का Formula

Positive:
Subject + Can + V¹ + Object

Negative:
Subject + Cannot (Can't) + V¹ + Object

Interrogative:
Can + Subject + V¹ + Object?

Use 1 : Ability (क्षमता)

जब किसी व्यक्ति, जानवर या वस्तु की क्षमता बतानी हो, तब Can का प्रयोग किया जाता है।

Use 2 : Permission (अनुमति)

अनौपचारिक (Informal) अनुमति देने या लेने के लिए Can का प्रयोग किया जाता है।

Use 3 : Possibility (संभावना)

किसी कार्य के संभव होने की स्थिति में Can का प्रयोग किया जाता है।

आज बारिश हो सकती है।

Anything can happen.
कुछ भी हो सकता है।

This road can be dangerous.
यह सड़क खतरनाक हो सकती है।

Use 4 : Request (अनुरोध)

साधारण Request करने के लिए भी Can का प्रयोग होता है।

औपचारिक (Formal) Request के लिए सामान्यतः Could या Would का प्रयोग अधिक उचित माना जाता है।

Could (कुड) Modal Verb

Could, Can का Past Form माना जाता है, लेकिन इसका प्रयोग केवल Past Ability के लिए ही नहीं, बल्कि Polite Request, Permission, Suggestion और Possibility के लिए भी किया जाता है।

Could = सकता था / सकती थी / सकते थे

भूतकाल की क्षमता बताने के लिए Could का प्रयोग किया जाता है।

May (मे) Modal Verb

Might = शायद / हो सकता है

Shall (शैल) Modal Verb

Shall एक Modal Verb है जिसका प्रयोग मुख्य रूप से Future (भविष्य), Suggestion (सुझाव), Offer (प्रस्ताव), Promise (वादा), Determination (दृढ़ निश्चय) तथा Legal/Formal Language में किया जाता है। आधुनिक English में सामान्य Future के लिए Will अधिक प्रचलित है, लेकिन Shall अभी भी Formal English, Rules, Contracts तथा Suggestions में बहुत उपयोगी है।

Shall = करेगा / करेंगे / क्या करें?

Use 1 : Simple Future (मुख्यतः I & We के साथ)

Traditional English Grammar में I और We के साथ Future बताने के लिए Shall का प्रयोग किया जाता था। आजकल सामान्य बातचीत में इसकी जगह Will अधिक प्रयोग होता है।

Must (मस्ट) Modal Verb

Must = अवश्य / ज़रूर / करना ही चाहिए / करना ही होगा

Need का अर्थ है "ज़रूरत होना"। यह Main Verb और Modal Verb दोनों की तरह प्रयोग हो सकता है। यहाँ हम इसके Modal Verb वाले प्रयोग को समझेंगे।

Advanced Rules of Modal Verbs

अब तक आपने सभी महत्वपूर्ण Modal Verbs को अलग-अलग पढ़ लिया है। अब समय है उन Advanced Rules को समझने का जो Board Exams, Competitive Exams, Spoken English, SSC, Banking, NDA, CDS, CUET तथा अन्य प्रतियोगी परीक्षाओं में अक्सर पूछे जाते हैं।


Rule 1 : Modal Verb के बाद हमेशा Verb की First Form (V¹) आती है

Subject + Modal Verb + V¹

Modal Verb के बाद कभी भी to + Verb, Verb + ing, Verb + s/es का प्रयोग नहीं किया जाता।

Rule 2 : दो Modal Verbs एक साथ नहीं आते

एक ही Clause में सामान्यतः दो Modal Verbs का प्रयोग नहीं किया जाता।

यदि दो Modal का अर्थ व्यक्त करना हो, तो सामान्यतः be able to, have to, या अन्य संरचना का प्रयोग किया जाता है।

Rule 3 : Modal Verb का Third Form नहीं बनता

Modal Verbs की कोई ing Form, Third Form या s/es Form नहीं होती।
